Diving with the Injured
Diving with the Injured" has established an annual program in collaboration with the Defence Medical Service Diving Club, training healthcare professionals and injured veterans together through Ocean Diver courses, accompanied by fundraising events that lead to an overseas expedition. The initiative, supported by the University Hospital Birmingham Charity through the "Diving with the Injured" Fund, offers veterans with various injuries—including PTSD, spinal injuries, and limb loss—a supportive environment akin to military training, fostering personal resilience and camaraderie among participants and healthcare providers.
The program emphasizes rehabilitation through diving in comfortable waters, allowing veterans to experience a sense of normalcy. Participants engage in shared experiences with military nurses, where disability becomes secondary to the healing interactions and community formed during the trip.
Diving enables veterans to swim alongside able-bodied peers, often leading some to become instructors themselves. Supported by numerous charities, "Diving with the Injured" aims to connect with more volunteer groups for disabled diving and expand activities that include conservation efforts.
